On the twenty-eighth day of Halloween, my true love gave to me 28 nightmares, 27 fairies a'circlin', 26 demon doxies, 25 vampires rising at dusk, 24 will-o-whisps a'flittin', 23 graveyard plots, 22 rings of smoke, 21 chupacabras, 20 black cats, 19 jack-o-lanterns a'burnin', 18 shrines of lies, 17 skulls a'flamin', 16 Wednesday Addams a'dancin', 15 bonfires a'burnin', 14 shirtless sorcerers casting, 13 phantoms floating, 12 eyeballs a'staring, 11 Red Eye Louie Vodquilas, 10 fireball spells whirling, 9 hellhounds snarling, 8 ghosts a hauntin', 7 witches stirring, 6 skeletons clacking, 5 crows a'murderin', 4 ghouls a'dancin', 3 spiders spinning, 2 zombies running, and a vulture in the Halloween tree!

Monday is here, but a strange Monday it is! Normally I would be going back to work today after the weekend, but poor Cooper was attacked late yesterday afternoon by the large yard dog across the street that we used to think was his sire. I had run back to town to get my medication from the CVS in Target and some groceries from Walmart, and after I got home, before I even put any groceries away, Cooper wanted to go outside. It's so unusual for him, especially since he doesn't really like outside, that I just stopped everything and took him out. When we got outside, I saw that the neighbors across the street were out and their dogs were out as well. I thought it would be a good idea for them to socialize, since Cooper never really sees any other dogs, and their dogs crossed the road to visit with Cooper, including the large yard dog. They've been in each other's company before, so it seemed like no big deal, and everyone was getting along fine with lots of tail wagging and some barking, of course. Cooper wagged his tail, but he did not participate in the barking. The mom that lives there had come out and we were chatting, and then I noticed a truck up the street was heading towards us, so I mentioned that to her and we started herding the dogs out of the street. I wasn't sure how Cooper would react to the truck coming by, so I was about to reach down for him when suddenly Brownie, the big yard dog, grabbed what I thought at the time was Cooper's back leg. Cooper started screaming, I was yelling and grabbed Cooper up, but Brownie would not let go. I then began slapping Brownie across the face and he finally opened his mouth. Cooper was still screaming, the mom was crying, and she told her kids to take Brownie to the backyard. I checked Cooper out as best I could in the chaos, and he only seemed to be shaken at the time. I checked his leg, where I had thought Brownie had bitten him, but he seemed just fine. Ashley, the mom, apologized, and she went back towards the house (she was very upset as well and still crying), and I started back towards my house with Cooper. Cooper was clawing me terribly at the time, trying to get down, and since Brownie was no longer in the vicinity, I set him on the ground. He immediately ran faster than I've ever seen him run towards the house and up the steps.

I kept trying to see to Cooper, but now he seemed afraid of me and didn't want to come to me. When I could get close enough, if I touched his rear, he'd scream. The screams slowly turned into whines and whimpers when I touched him, so I assumed he was just soar from Brownie's massive jaws crushing him between the teeth. Eventually he calmed enough that I could pick him up, and then he clung to me and didn't want to leave my side. I didn't get to putting away the groceries for over an hour, so I hope the cold stuff is ok. Holding him, I also was an hour late taking my sleeping pills as well. I had been avoiding touching his rear end because I figured he was still soar, but at one point when he was on the floor and walking by me, I let my hand run along his side and I felt something. I picked him up and saw dried blood and a gash from Brownie's teeth. So that was why he screamed at first when I touched him there. He's never been hurt that badly before and he probably didn't know what to make of it. I held him for a lot longer, so I didn't get to bed until much later than I had planned. It was worth it taking care of my little guy though.

This morning when I got up, he didn't whine like he normally does when he hears my alarm go off. I went into the bathroom for a few minutes and finally he did start to whine. When I went out into the living room, he couldn't wait to get out of the crate to be with me. I decided then and there that work could wait another day and that I'd stay home with him today. After all, he comes first. As a result, I'll be working Saturday again, and I'm sure I'll be scheduled for the following Saturday as well, so that will be 3 Saturdays in a row. It's fine, he's worth it. He's sleeping in his crate right now while I get this entry out real quick. Then I'll be going back in to spend the rest of the day with him.

So, phew, what a way to end the weekend! I hope my little fellar never has to go through anything like that ever again! I definitely don't like seeing him distressed and certainly don't want him in pain. Hopefully he and I will both forget this incident before too long!
